In an SBR system, the process is performed in time instead of in space, as is the case with conventional wastewater treatment systems which usually have separate tanks for each treatment step. This implies that the wastewater is processed in a controlled batch in a single reactor tank. This results in less need for extra clarifiers, sludge return pumps and complicated hydraulic arrangements, and makes it particularly suitable for compact and containerized treatment plants.

Fill Phase

The typical stages of the SBR process include five steps. In the fill phase, the wastewater enters the reactor. This phase can be performed aerated or without aeration, or with and without mixing. Such conditions facilitate biological treatments like removal of organic matter, reduction of nitrogen and reduction of phosphorus.

Reaction Phase

Following the reaction phase, the system goes into a settle phase. The entire aeration and mixing is stopped and the biological sludge will settle naturally at the bottom of the tank. During this period the tank is stationary and solids separation may be very efficient as compared to continuous-flow systems.

Settle Phase

The draw / decant process starts when the sludge has settled. The treated water is gently pumped from the top clear section of the tank through the decanting mechanism of the tank and not disturbing the settled sludge at the bottom of the tank. If desired, an idle time phase may follow that provides flexibility in the system before the next cycle starts and permits the removal of excess sludge when required.
